Problem Statement
This problem we were trying to figure out what the probability of winning the lottery is and how we found all these things. We had to go through a bunch of different things To get to the point where we are at now. The rules that we had to follow were that you can only choose 5 different numbers that were from 1-47 and then the mega number between 1-27.
Process and Solution
Probability of you winningThere is a very small chance of you winning the lottery but to find out how you do sit is you just multiply all of the number combinations together

My initial guess that I had was that it was 1 in a million of winning the lottery but I was way off. When I guess that I wasn't really thinking math I was thinking just the basic things and i turned out to be so wrong. There was a lot of math that had to go into this so we had to really think about what the probability instead of just a random number.
Different Number CombinationsAt first when I tried to solve it for real I wasn't really thinking about it being dependant so I just went with it as if it was independent and that was wrong so i had to go back to see why it was wrong and fix it. So i said that the probability was 1/47 for each number but really it goes down each time and it starts at 5/47.
The reason that it does this is because they have 5 numbers and it doesn't have to be in order. And it goes down by one each time is because the numbers cant repeat. |
What are your expected winnings if you match all 6 numbers?
What we did here was find the expected payout that the people from the california super lotto have. To find that you have to plug in the amount that you would win (8 million) and multiply that by the probability of you winning the lottery. and then you add it with negative one multiplied by 4,969,962,240 and then you get the answers form both and you subtract them so i ended up with -4,009,962,240 and you divide that by 4,969,962,240 and that equals -0.80. That means that for every dollar that you spend on the lottery the lottery people are getting 80 cents of that.
Problem evaluation
I really liked this problem because we got to learn about gambling and probability. I thought that it was a really fun way to learn about probability and how it works. I think I got a really good understanding of probability especially when we were applying it to actual things that we are doing in the real world such as playing the lottery or gambling.
Self evaluation
I think that i deserve an A because I put a lot of effort into this unit and really deepened my thinking on probability and it was a really fun unit for me. I think that I really tried my best and tried to do everything right but even when I got something wrong I would try to understand why and then I would apply that to my learning and try to make sure that I got it right. I feel like I really helped my group mates when we were all working on solving the Problem because they were kind of stuck and I was working on my own but then once I figured out what I was doing I went back and I helped them figure it out. So I feel that i really pushed myself to do my best throughout this whole unit because even though I knew some of it the things that I did learn helped me deepen my understanding.
