Project overview
- This was the first month of so of chemistry and what we did was learn a whole lot in a short amount of time so that we could get to the project part of chemistry. Here we learned a lot of the basics of chemistry and for some it was review. We learned a lot about the structure and everything of an atom and the periodic table so a lot of the basic stuff. We really went into depth on this stuff so that we could understand the basics and then eventually understand the more complicated stuff on chemistry. We would do a lot of packets that would help us deepen our thinking and we also watched a lot of videos that would help us with our thinking.
Academic & Life Skills
Here we obviously learned a lot about the basics of chemistry and how to identify things on the periodic table. We learned a lot about valence electrons and their purpose and that helped a lot because then we realized how things bonded and we made sure that that all made sense before we went on to more complicated things. It also surprised me how much math we used in it to try to solve things for chemistry. We worked in a lot of groups but we also tried to problem solve by ourselves so that we could learn the subject by ourselves but then help our peers if we learned it first. These skills are very important at our school because we are always helping our peers and working together to try to solve things that we don’t know or teaching them things that we do know.
- Some life skills that we learned that will help us in the real world are how to collaborate with other and make sure that they know that we are willing to help them with things that we do understand. Also we are showing them that we are willing to learn from them and I think that we don’t see that often because people like to show that they can figure it out by themselves. This way we can show people that we are willing to learn and grow from what they are teaching us.
Reflection
- I thought that this was a good way to start chemistry since we didnt have a lot of time with her but we still needed to get the same amount of information as the other classes. I think that I really did do a lot of thinking and learning as we went through this whole chemistry bootcamp and I feel that we were very rushed and that the things that we learned didn’t really stick as much as they would have if we would have had more time to take in the information.
