Why this topic?
I am very passionate about this topic because every since I was little I have always looked up to the women that I would see on tv or in the magazines and that would make me think that the people around me like my mom and my tias and none of them really looked like the people in the magazines or on tv. Now that I am grown up and actually know the stories I realize that there isn’t that true. I have also found that the brain is something that is very interesting to me. I have found that the brain is something that is very interesting to me and I want to make sure that I find a way to tie that back into my zine and into my social topic. I want this to be my topic so that I can educate young girls and other people of all genders that their is an idea of beauty that we all have but we need to be able to alter it because everyone has their own beauty.
Zine cover pageMy collage is about beauty standards and the way that people view the women in the magazines. I added these images because I feel like they all have the same message of having all of the models and people look a certain way so that they can be considered beautiful and in a way better looking. Having these be in magazines make people that don't look like them wonder why there isn' anyone representing them.
We made these zines when we went to the Museum of Contemporary Art in downtown San Diego. We went on a field trip there and spent some time making this and touring the museum to see their social justice topics around there. This has helped me realize that my topic is something that I am really passionate about and it makes me a little concerned that even now when we see all different body types we still rely on the ones that look a certain way to be the ones in the magazines and even on social media. |
