This week a moment when I learned something is when I was at the museum and we were creating our zine pages. I was sitting there and I was looking through the pages trying to find the things that would make up my zine and I found the opposite of what I was looking for. Being patient and persevering I found the pieces that would make up my zine. This was a moment of learning for me because I have known for a while that I was going to do beauty standards and make something around that topic. But now I have found that I have a passion for bio and wanted to incorporate something from that into what I am doing. As I was flipping through the magazines I noticed how many people in the magazine were not a size 0. There was 1 that I saw that was not that size and too me it made me think if I were a little girl and I were looking through these magazines this would make me think that I didn’t look like them and it would make me feel weird about my own body. I know that I was like that as a young girl but as I got older I realized that there were more girls that looked like me but the stigma of wanting to be smaller has always been there. Looking into more of the psychology side of this topic and connecting it back to the readings that were going on in class I learned that. “Beauty is, for the greater part, some qualities acting mechanically upon the human mind by the intervention of senses.” - Edmund Burke. Even though this quote was said a very long time ago I can still apply it to what my topic is around and even to the neurological side of my topic. Comparing this to what we have been reading is making me think even deeper into what my project is going to be about. This leaves me with the questions on how can I take my research a little bit further to be able to get the right amount of information to get me through this project learning lots!

This week there was a lot of different articles that we had to make connections to the things that we are learning and seeing as we are watching the movie Terra. Watching this movie I didn’t really see how it would connect to the brain and the things that we were learning about the brain. But taking a step back and analyzing the readings and the notes that I took on the movie made me realize that there was actually a lot of similarities. As I said last week there was a lot to do with the social needs but there are also basic needs that everyone needs in life that are Food, Water and, Shelter. Connecting this to the silent spring it doesn’t take a lot for us to be hurting the environment and by us hurting the environment we are hurting all of our basic needs just to reach our social needs. I think that learning about these needs before we dive into a deeper understanding of the brain and how it works we can connect the behaviors to the social needs that we have as human beings. For example in the reading the silent spring it talked about how humans don’t really care about what is in the products that we are using but we do care about the amount of money that it is making. The social need for that would be status and that means that we are trying to show that wwe have status just by making the most money instead of caring about the environment. That when again with the movie tera, the same thing was going on. As humans some of us eat meat and to get the meat the animals are treated in bad conditions just so that they can mass produce the animals to export them to get to the consumers and make more money. It’s not only in food it is also in the basic need of shelter because we are taking land from the animals and moving them to other places. I like that all of the readings that we did this week were all connected and I can also see the differences between them. If we are noticing the things that we are doing as humans how come no one is doing anything about it? And if people were noticing these things earlier like when the book silent spring was out how come they continued to do these things? This week was very interesting to me! I knew that we were going to be learning a lot about brains this semester but I didn't think there was going to be much connections to my life or how I process things. To my surprise there was a lot of things that I connected to my life. One part that specifically connected to my life was our social - emotional needs as human beings. I never thought that the way that I think about my life is because of these 5 words. Status, Certainty, Autonomy, Relatedness, and fairness. I can relate all of these words to something in my life that may be something different than what you might relate it to. When one of these are threatened you have 3 different responses to threat. You may call on someone for help, and if no help is present you go into fight or flight mode, and if you can’t fight anymore you may collapse and that is when your body feels defeat and can no longer fight. So for example if my certainty was being threatened by someone stealing my car I would call out for help so maybe that would mean my parents or the police and if we still couldn’t find it my fight or flight would be kicking in where I would be looking for it everywhere and filing police reports and then if they still couldn’t find it my body may give up and then I would have to get a new car after all. I think that after learning about the social and emotional pain I can be more aware of the reason why people are reacting to certain things. So if someone gets mad at me for something I may think isn’t bad it may be because one of their social emotional needs in their life is feeling threatened. But even after learning all about that I’m still wondering if it always takes the same amount of time for you to change in between them and how it varies from person to person? |
